Founded in Helsinki in 2009 by Finnish textile designers Mari Martikainen and Minna Impiö, Mifuko was inspired by the remarkable skills of artisans they encountered in Nairobi’s marketplaces. Their vision was simple: combine Scandinavian design with time-honoured African handicraft techniques to create products that are both beautiful and meaningful.

Each Mifuko basket is handwoven in Kenya by skilled women artisans and is truly one of a kind. Every piece includes a tag signed by its maker, connecting you directly to the person who crafted it. Through long-term partnerships, Mifuko supports fair wages, safe working conditions, and educational opportunities, helping create sustainable livelihoods for artisan communities.

Today, Mifuko works with more than 1,350 artisans in rural Kenya, and its products are enjoyed in over 30 countries around the world. Guided by values of sustainability, social responsibility, and timeless design, Mifuko creates pieces that are made to be used and appreciated for years to come.
